Dynamic Core Stability

Dynamic core stability is the ability of the body to use various muscles in complex ways to control movement around the pelvis, lower trunk and abdomen. Core stability allows for optimum posture both when stationary and with activity, and also helps to reduce the risk of injury. Poor core stability results in poor posture, inefficient transfer of power from the upper body to the lower and vice versa, and a marked increase in the risk of injuries to many body areas including the low back and pelvis, mid-back and neck, and the lower limbs. Many types of injury can adversely affect the capacity of the stabilising muscles resulting in reduced core stability, which may then result in an increased risk of re-injury or further injury. Hence, the retraining of the core stabilising muscles is often a critical part of any rehabilitation program.

Gymnasium

Both our practices have large gymnasium areas to allow plenty of room to exercise.

You may have noticed a few changes around the Dickson practice over the last couple of months. We’ve been updating our gym equipment and have now given the room a face-lift to make it easier on the eye and also more user friendly. Our new equipment and a new look allows us to provide users of the gym with an excellent facility to continue their rehabilitation.

We have installed a new treadmill and bike for your use. The treadmill offers users a range of walking and running programs and has the ability to incline to 120- a hefty slope! The bike is very simple to use, has an adjustable resistance and the easy spinning makes it an excellent low impact option.

Another addition (pictured below) is called a Total Gym. It is extremely versatile and is suitable for those just starting off an exercise program or rehabilitation after injury to those looking for higher level workout and conditioning. If you’d like to try the machine or even have a demonstration of its use we’d be more than happy to show you the ropes.

Please ask any of our physiotherapists to show you around or to incorporate this new equipment into your program. After you become comfortable on the equipment with your physiotherapist, you are able to book in and use the equipment whenever you like!

Hydrotherapy

SportsCare and Physiotherapy Dickson provides an ergonomically designed hydrotherapy pool, specifically used for musculoskeletal, and joint replacement rehabilitation. The pool is heated to 36ºC and safety features including a pool surveillance camera and an emergency call button ensure your comfort and safety. This facility can be used independently or included in a therapy programme co-ordinated by your physiotherapist.

Massage Therapy

A wide range of soft tissue techniques are offered by Kirsty Bernau, a qualified massage therapist, at our O'Connor practice.

Musculoskeletal Conditions/Injuries

A musculoskeletal injury is an injury or disorder of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, nerves or related soft tissues including strains, sprains or inflammation. These are often those nagging pains and discomforts that just don't seem to be getting better. Physiotherapy is well placed to assess these injuries, promote optimal recovery of the damaged tissues and re-educate functional movement patterns for the affected joints.

Neurological Rehabilitation

At SportsCare, Christine Sproule is responsible for the treatment of neurological disorders. She has a wide variety of experience in managing stroke, brain injury, spinal injury and a variety of other nerve related disorders. These disorders commonly affect the movement control and balance systems of the body. With the dedication of the individual and the correct physiotherapy guidance, people can rehabilitate to their potential.

Orthopaedic and Post Operative Rehabilitation

This type of rehabilitation refers to injuries of the skeleton and related structures such as joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and a number of other anatomical structures. Some of these types of injury require surgical repair by an orthopaedic surgeon. The rehabilitation of both surgical and non-surgical orthopaedic injuries requires specialised physiotherapy care to restore normal movement, strength and control to the affected area. The physiotherapists at SportsCare and Physiotherapy have both the training and a wealth of clinical experience to ensure the optimum recovery from all types of orthopaedic injuries and post-surgical rehabilitation.

Orthotics

SportsCare and Physiotherapy uses the GaitScan force plate technology to prescribe custom orthotics. Patients are assessed for their suitability via clinical assessment and taping.

Paediatric Physiotherapy

Paediatric Physiotherapy

We are delighted to provide a range of paediatric physiotherapy services at Dickson for all children, from babies through to adolescents.  Some common concerns that are appropriate for physiotherapy assessment include:

  • Plagiocephaly (mis-shapen head)
  • Foot and Leg Posture concerns
  • Other posture concerns
  • Delays in reaching early milestones like sitting, standing and walking and later milestones like jumping, hopping and climbing
  • Motor Co-ordination difficulties e.g. general clumsiness, frequent falls, throwing, catching, kicking
  • Kindergarten Screen follow up assessment
  • Awkward walking or running styles
  • Scoliosis Screening
  • Musculoskeletal pain

Through a comprehensive assessment, we seek to partner with parents and children to identify whether there is in fact a basis for concern.  If there are recommendations to be made, we aim to work with you to develop a realistic and time efficient programme that can be implemented at home and integrated in a way that will impose minimal pressure on the family.

Pilates and Feldenkrais

The Feldenkrais Method is based on an understanding of the relationship between the nervous system and the body. Inefficiencies or difficulties observed in a person's movement are really inefficiencies in neurological co-ordination. Having individual lessons in this method will re-educate a person's movement patterns.

The Pilates Method is designed to improve core stability and balance stabilisation with mobilisation. Rehabilitative and conditioning Pilates is available on a one-on-one basis. Semi-private conditioning Pilates is available on weekends.

Running Assessment

running assessmentRunning is a challenging sport where a sound ,efficent technique is crucial to good performance and injury prevention. At SportsCare and Physiotherapy we use video assessment to highlight your running faults, a musculoskeletal screening to identify potential problem areas and corrective drills and exercises to improve your technique.

The ability to run well is governed by many factors: fitness, flexibility, control, strength, and biomechanics are just a few. Not all these factors are changeable, but one factor that can be changed is your running technique. The running Technique Improvement Programme (TIP) offered by SportsCare and Physiotherapy is tailored specifically for individuals and consists of five unique sessions. Each session builds on those before to give you, the runner, a comprehensive programme aimed at improving running form, efficiency and speed.

Sports Physiotherapy

Sports Physiotherapy is an important aspect of our practice. It involves the diagnosis and treatment of any of a multitude of injuries that occur on the sports field from the elite level to the recreational athlete. Our physiotherapists are trained to take you from initial injury to return to sport and will refer for you to appropriate health professionals where required. Many of our physiotherapists are working with local, state and international teams.

Women's Health

Sometimes women need special treatment. During pregnancy, recovering from pregnancy and birth and later in life you may need a physio with a special interest in Women's Health issues.

For example:

  • Backpain in pregnancy
  • Preparation for birth sessions
  • Pelvic floor and abdominal muscle retraining after birth
  • Treatment for mastitis
  • Post-mastectomy exercises and lymphoedema prevention
  • Management of incontinence and pelvic floor weakness (this is also relevant to men after prostate surgery)

Work Related Injuries

Our physiotherapists apply an active model to the rehabilitation of work related injuries. We aim to restore the injured worker back to full function in much the same way an injured athlete is returned to sport. SportsCare and Physiotherapy is involved in the rehabilitation of workers from large companies such as Australia Post and Coles to individual workers.
